Action Research Plan

Action Research Plan
Jennifer Millsap

Goal: “Will students that are allowed to use technology (computers, cameras, digital microscopes, iPods, iPads, printers, and calculators) in class daily score better on subject test than students that are taught in a traditional manner, such as book and notes?”

2.       Teach classes the same for the first 3 units of study. (using the CScope Lesson Sequence)Test each class at end of unit. Average Classes Test scores.

3.       Compare class scores. Find classes with similar makeup in order to test use of technology

4.       Survey students about how they have learned so far. Make a survey on survey monkey. Have them complete short questionnaire

5.       Allow one class to have unlimited use of all types of technology (computer, iPads, iPods, digital microscopes, digital cameras, printers, and calculators) One class will only be taught with books, notes, and labs in a traditional manner of teaching.  Teach the next three units from CScope in this manner. Test at the end of each unit and average the scores of each class again.

  1. Jenn, I teach 6th grade Science also, so I wonder about using technology in my classroom to see if it can change the results on subject based tests. I use some technology in my classroom, and in the least I can say the kids get excited when they get to use technology rather than just sitting listening to lecture or taking notes. I do have a couple of questions on your action research plan. Other than the subject based tests at the end of each unit, how do you plan to evaluate the use of the technology? You might want to consider student’s interviews or surveys to get a perspective of how the students feel about using the technology. If they enjoy using the technology this might increase a desire to perform better on the tests. Also, I know that my classes are very differentiated as far as learning levels, so how are you going to determine which one class to allow using the technology? Finally, are you planning any time to provide training of the technology before you let the kids use the different technology devices? Sometimes depending on the class size, this could be time consuming especially if the students have no prior knowledge of the technology. Your plan seems to be very generalized, so you might think about adding some detail and specifics of procedures you might use, data you will collect, how you will analyze the data, and how you will disseminate and share your findings with others. I hope that some of this helps. Good luck with your plan.

  2. Hi Jenn, just as a side thought to make your action plan fit and not overlap follow the following instructions- I had the same problem:
    - Go to Design- then select the Template designer - Adjust width: I choose 950

  3. Hi Jenn, to me it looks like you need to incorporate some of the other 8 steps of action research into your plan.
I would suggest incorporting your initial reseach as a step i.e. Developing Understanding by researching current thinking in the use of technology.
Include steps that focus on reflection- do I have the skills and resources to implement my plan? Also: at the end of your action plan: How are you going to use your findings to sustain improvement?
Other ways of expanding your study so that you could narrow done the factors of influence is student attitudes- is the computer aids or the student's attitudes towards using them that affect learning? Are some tools more effective than others?

Just some thoughts - I hope they may help in this week's assignment :)

  4. I agree with David. However, I think you are doing something great here. These students we are working with right now will need to be technologically advanced to work in the society. Good work!

  5. Thank you guys. I made some changes so hopeful this will work a little better. David thinks for the hint on changing the size. I hadn't taken the time to do so.
